What’s the EFSA health claim about olive polyphenols?
In Europe, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has approved a specific health claim for certain olive oils. The claim states that:
“Olive oil polyphenols contribute to the protection of blood lipids from oxidative stress.”
This claim only applies to qualifying olive oils sold in the EU, and only when they contain a minimum amount of hydroxytyrosol and related compounds.
Does this apply to Olive Mill Water™?
No — EFSA’s approved claim is for olive oil only, and it doesn’t apply to beverages or to Olive Mill Water™. We share this information simply because it highlights the growing scientific interest in olive polyphenols, including hydroxytyrosol, around the world.
Why mention it at all?
People are often surprised to learn how much research is happening in the olive‑polyphenol space. The EFSA claim is one example of how different regions recognise and evaluate these compounds - but it’s not a claim about our product.
